Unlike ordinary web addresses (URLs), which can \u201cbreak\u201d when websites move or change, ARKs are designed to <strong data-start=\"2089\" data-end=\"2104\">stay stable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2109\" data-end=\"2146\">When you see an ARK, it guarantees:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2147\" data-end=\"2416\">\n<li data-start=\"2147\" data-end=\"2213\">\n<p data-start=\"2149\" data-end=\"2213\">A <strong data-start=\"2151\" data-end=\"2175\">permanent identifier<\/strong> that always points to the resource.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2214\" data-end=\"2307\">\n<p data-start=\"2216\" data-end=\"2307\">The ability to resolve to either the <strong data-start=\"2253\" data-end=\"2272\">resource itself<\/strong> or its <strong data-start=\"2280\" data-end=\"2304\">metadata description<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2308\" data-end=\"2416\">\n<p data-start=\"2310\" data-end=\"2416\">A format that is easy to understand and share, e.g.<br data-start=\"2361\" data-end=\"2364\" \/><code data-start=\"2366\" data-end=\"2414\">https:\/\/ark.ngren.edu.ng\/ark:\/99999\/ngren.001<\/code><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 data-start=\"2418\" data-end=\"2469\">Why ARKs are Ideal for Research and Education<\/h4>\n<ul data-start=\"2470\" data-end=\"2865\">\n<li data-start=\"2470\" data-end=\"2613\">\n<p data-start=\"2472\" data-end=\"2613\"><strong data-start=\"2475\" data-end=\"2489\">Longevity:<\/strong> ARKs were designed for archives, libraries, and research data \u2014 ensuring materials remain accessible far into the future.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2614\" data-end=\"2754\">\n<p data-start=\"2616\" data-end=\"2754\"><strong data-start=\"2619\" data-end=\"2635\">Flexibility:<\/strong> Works for many resource types (not just publications).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2755\" data-end=\"2865\">\n<p data-start=\"2757\" data-end=\"2865\"><strong data-start=\"2760\" data-end=\"2777\">Transparency:<\/strong> ARKs are open, non-proprietary, and widely used by research infrastructures globally.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sovereign, local stewardship:<\/strong> Institutions can manage their own \u201cshoulders\u201d (sub-namespaces) while still being part of the larger NgREN ecosystem.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Low barrier:<\/strong> ARKs are open and widely adopted in libraries and archives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>What does an ARK look like?<br \/>\n<code>ark:\/NAAN\/Name[Qualifier]<\/code><\/h4>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li><strong>NAAN:<\/strong> Name Assigning Authority Number (assigned to an organization)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Name:<\/strong> A locally assigned string under that NAAN<\/li>\n<li><strong>Qualifier (optional):<\/strong> Points to a part, version, or service<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Persistence and resolution<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>NgREN operates a resolver service that redirects <strong>ark:\/\u2026<\/strong> links to the current resource location.<\/li>\n<li>If a URL changes, the ARK remains the same; only the target in our resolver is updated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Interoperability<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>ARKs complement other identifiers: <strong>ORCID<\/strong> (people), <strong>ROR<\/strong> (institutions), and <strong>DOIs<\/strong> (datasets\/publications).<\/li>\n<li>Our aim is to <strong>connect PIDs<\/strong> across systems to strengthen discovery and attribution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 data-start=\"2867\" data-end=\"2900\">Example Use Cases in NgREN Community:<\/h4>\n<ul data-start=\"2901\" data-end=\"3140\">\n<li data-start=\"2901\" data-end=\"2959\">\n<p data-start=\"2903\" data-end=\"2959\">A university library assigns ARKs to digitized theses.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2960\" data-end=\"3036\">\n<p data-start=\"2962\" data-end=\"3036\">A research institute uses ARKs for datasets supporting published papers.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3037\" data-end=\"3140\">\n<p data-start=\"3039\" data-end=\"3140\">A national project archives reports and official documents with ARKs for credibility and stability.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Contact<\/strong><br \/>\nQuestions about ARKs at NgREN? \u2192 <a href=\"https:\/\/nirisproject.ngren.edu.ng\/index.php\/contact\/\"><strong>Contact us<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What are Archival Resource Keys (ARKs)?
