{"id":1003,"date":"2025-08-22T22:45:17","date_gmt":"2025-08-22T22:45:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pids.ngren.edu.ng\/?page_id=1003"},"modified":"2025-08-23T20:56:53","modified_gmt":"2025-08-23T20:56:53","slug":"pid-policy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/nirisproject.ngren.edu.ng\/index.php\/pid-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"PID Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>NgREN PID (ARK) Policy<\/h2>\n<h6>NgREN PID (ARK) Policy \u2014 Scope, Governance, and Persistence<\/h6>\n<p>The policy focuses on the following among others:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unique identifier assignment (via ARKs)<\/li>\n<li>Long-term resolution via NgREN resolver<\/li>\n<li>Versioning and redirection guidelines<\/li>\n<li>Institutional governance and sustainability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Scope and eligibility<\/strong><br \/>NgREN manages ARKs for eligible Nigerian <strong>universities, polytechnics, colleges, research centres, and cultural heritage organizations<\/strong> participating in the NgREN federation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Naming &amp; assignment<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>\n<p>Each participating organization may receive a <strong>dedicated namespace<\/strong> under NgREN\u2019s NAAN or its own NAAN from <a href=\"https:\/\/arks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ARK Alliance<\/a>\u00a0where applicable.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Local naming is delegated to the institution following NgREN guidelines on uniqueness and stability.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. Metadata requirements<\/strong><br \/>Every ARK must have <strong>minimal descriptive metadata<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>\n<p>Title<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Creator\/Responsible unit<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Resource type (e.g., thesis, dataset)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Landing\/target URL<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Owning institution<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Date of issuance (minted)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4. Persistence commitment<\/strong><br \/>NgREN commits to maintain the resolver and core services, including:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>\n<p><strong>Persistent resolution<\/strong> of ARKs under our stewardship<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Reasonable efforts to <strong>update targets<\/strong> when locations change<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Maintaining <strong>service continuity<\/strong> during infrastructure upgrades<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>5. Versioning and changes<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>\n<p>Where resources are versioned, qualifiers or new ARKs may be assigned.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Substantive changes to a resource may require a new ARK to preserve citation integrity.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>6. Takedowns and redirects<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>\n<p>Requests for takedown or access restrictions are handled by the owning institution following legal and ethical guidelines.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>ARKs may resolve to metadata\/notice pages if access is restricted.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>7. Service levels<\/strong> <em>(fill in your targets)<\/em><\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>\n<p>Uptime target: <strong>[e.g., 99.5% annually]<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Support response: <strong>[e.g., 2 business days]<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Change notifications posted on <strong>Service Status<\/strong> page.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>8.
